May Books; Planner Giveaway!
With 2013 rapidly approaching, life getting busier by the minute, and lots of appointments, meetings, and to-do lists, I quickly realized that I needed to start planning on which planner I was going to get this year. Last year I had the EC planner, and as much as I loved it at the beginning, within months it was thrown in a drawer to be untouched for the remaining of the year.
So? Change of plan. This year, I looked at what I needed out of a planner and how I can make it successful. Meaning, last me longer than a couple months.
One thing that I noticed right away was that I am a simple person. I don't like too much, and I get overwhelmed by too many pages, too many options, and too many opportunities to get frustrated by how busy life is. And how hard it is to catch up.
The steps? Don't get much easier than One.Two.Three. There aren't any tricks or secrets. You choose your pattern. Add a cute monogram. Choose the inside pages {planner, meal planner, baby tracker, and so forth}, and then take a glimpse at your beautiful design and checkout!
The actual planner? Tiny, just right. Will fit in any purse and go!

No more whipping out my chunky planner out of my diaper bag and scrummaging through it to find out if I am free on this date or that date for an appointment.
So? Do you have a May Books already? Are you planning on getting one?
Lucky you, you get a chance to win one today!!!

Show & Tell; How I met your Father
How I met Your Father
Well. This story. It's been on my blog a couple of times, but I always love to share it. One, because I love our sweet little story. And two, there are always people who haven't heard it.
So how did I meet Andrew? Ahem. Without going into too much detail... I will say this. It was our second semester of our freshmen year at college. I had just moved in with a girl I barely knew {because of original roommate issues} and we were still getting to know each other. We had gone out to separate places one night and decided to meet back at the room around 1ish in the morning. You know, about the time that people normally go to sleep. You would think.
She proceeded to ask me if it was okay if her "Friends" from high school come over. Two boys. Sure? I guess. Who am I to say no?
The two boys come. Two boys by the name of Andrew, and his roommate {and best friend} Chris. Andrew was cute you know. I thought, hm, he's a pretty good lucking guy... why haven't I heard of him yet? But then shrugged off the thought almost as immediately as it came into my head. Afterall, I wanted to go to sleep, ya know?
You know who DID go to sleep though? As soon as these two "Friends" show up? Oh you know, the roommate that invited them.
We then ended up sitting in the dorm {while Laura snoozed} until about 5am talking a mile a minute. Me and Andrew that is. His friend? Oh ya, remember him? He wanted to shoot himself in the foot and was BEGGING to leave.
Finally, they left. I hit the sack, turned off the lights, and didn't think anything of it.
Andrew though, {come to find out later on} said to his roommate {as he closed the door behind him}.... "She's going to be mine."
And the rest? Well, the rest is history :)
And the longest answer to a question goes to..... ME!
2. Show us the very first {or one of the first} pictures you guys ever took together. {Feel free to show us more than one}
Oh joy. Good thing I was so good looking back in the day {insert sarcasm}.
3. Tell us some of your favorite memories that you two had together.
Oh man, where to begin. We have so many that I am smiling/blushing already just thinking about them. I love the beginning stage of our relationship {and where it has lead us}. We were seriously the most love birds of all love birds, completely smitten, and obsessed with one another. Andrew is one special man, and he touched my heart in ways I had never thought possible.
I remember our first concert together... the OAR concert. We couldn't keep our hands off of each other.
I remember when he first asked me to officially be his "girlfriend."
I remember Andrew spending walking me to every class, and back.
I remember laying together after just a few weeks of dating and talking about our future, our marriage, and our children.
I remember spring break that year. It was the BEST vacation I had ever had. It was also the time when Andrew first said I love you.
And I will stop there because the mushy gushy stuff is out of control right now.
4. Tell us your favorite qualities about this man, what makes him "the one."
Honest. Huge heart, one of his best qualities that he will ever have. Giving. Kind. Generous. Thoughtful. Strong. An amazing father. An amazing son-in-law {which is so important to me}.
5. Tell us what your "date nights" typically look like.
Now or then? Ha. I will tell you what our FAVORITE kind of date night is. And that is us getting dolled up, heading downtown, ordering too many things off the menu and sharing a couple bottles of wine {not when pregnant} at our favorite restaurant, Ruths Chris, and then getting a hotel room for the night.
We always have a great time. Spend too much money, but always have a great time.
We like to do this for birthdays, special occasions, and every couple of months. Again... when I'm not pregnant, obviously.

Next Weeks Questions: Careers/Your "Job"
1. Tell us what you studied in college. Is your job now related to what you studied?
2. Tell us what your everyday job looks like.
3. Do you have a picture of you at work? Show us.
4. In 10 years, what do you see yourself doing? Same thing? More? Tell us.
5. Tell us what you have learned, and what {if any} recommendations you may have for those looking to go into the field you are in.

Meet Melissa
BLOG \\ TWITTER \\ FACEBOOK \\ |
I'm Melissa. I was born and raised here in sunny Southern California. I grew up on 5 beautiful acres ofproperty wedged between miles of lemon groves. I traded lemon groves and tree climbing for city lights and traffic when I moved to West L.A. to live with my amazing man.
We became husband and wife on June 11th 2011. It was, by far, the happiest and best day of my life. He is my best friend, my love, my partner, my greatest support system, and my favorite person.
We are crazy animal people. Currently, we have five cats, all rescues. In the past, we have also taken in hamsters, guinea pigs, and even a lizard.
Aside from family and friends, my favorite things in this world are
folk music, tea (especially green tea with blueberries), literature, fresh cut flowers,
meditation, yoga, kirtan, & traveling.

I will be very surprised if we go to 40 weeks with this baby boy. I'm thinking my magic eight ball {the hopeful one} is saying more around the 38 week mark. Which means 8 weeks. Which means... I better get a move on these last minute things!

A letter to my daughter... for her future
10.16.12
Dear Elliana,
As I laid in bed tonight stroking your hair, running my palm across your soft sweet cheeks, planting soft kisses across your forehead, I started thinking. I closed my eyes and I envisioned the future. And my heart began to write to you this letter.
It took some time for you to finally fall asleep, but I wrote this letter to you all while I watched your eyes slowly shut and enter a world of dreams. Sweet, beautiful dreams.
Once I was certain that you were asleep, I ran down the stairs, gave your papa a big kiss and opened up the computer. I had to take this letter and write it down. I wanted these thoughts to be permanent. I wanted to be able to read this again. Over and over. A year from now. Five. Ten. Perhaps my outlook then will change. Perhaps not. But whatever the reason, I just felt like I needed to write all this down.
Today, while we were at toddler time, I witnessed another girl, slightly older than you, be mean to you. Of course you hadn't noticed the snatching of every block from your hands as acts of "bullying" or "being mean." But your mama noticed. Your mama noticed and it hurt my heart, because all you wanted to do was play. Although this little girl is far too young to understand, and had no idea what she was doing {or intention to hurt}, it made me think of other things nonetheless.
About your future.
I thought about you growing up. Getting older. Starting school. Meeting new friends. Experiencing challenges down the road. Heartbreaks. Losses. And I shut my eyes fighting back tears. Tears over something that has not even happened yet.
I worry so much about you. I worry that soon I won't be able to protect you from all the evils of the world that are completely out of my hands. I worry that I won't be there to defend you, stick up for you, and scoop you up and take you away during moments of heartbreak or fear. I worry about how these obstacles in life will impact you. Whether you will open up to me. Whether you will let me in.
I know you won't want me to fight your battles as you get older. I know you will get "embarrassed" by my forward don't-hold-anything-back personality. I know that you will one day want to be independent, make decisions that may lead to heartache, and walk into situations that I laid in bed 16 years prior fearing of.
I know these things. I am aware of all the challenges that parents have to go through while their children grow. I get that I will have to let go of my worries and fear and just have faith and trust.
But it's hard Elliana. It's so so hard. You aren't even two yet and I sit late at night crying my eyes out thinking about the perfect plan to protect you from it all.
I don't have that plan Elliana. In writing. I don't have a plan A or a plan B. But I do promise you this. Your mama and papa will love you more than anyone in this world. We promise to protect you. To teach you. To show you respect. To praise you. To make you laugh. Show you the world. Live life to the fullest.
We want to raise you to be a strong, independent, kind, loving, respectful little girl that will blossom into a young woman one day. We want you to look past the negativity that surrounds the world that we live in and focus on the beautiful blessings around us. We want you to know when to walk away. How to say no. When to fight for something you are passionate about, and when to know its time to let go. The lists of wants and things that we envision for your future are endless. But most of all, we want to protect your heart and your soul.
I can't promise you that you won't go through heartache or loss, challenges, and obstacles.
But I can promise you that through it all, there will be two people you can forever rely on to be there for you.
Your mama and your papa. Please, never forget that.
Stay strong, stay beautiful, be kind, gentle, and respectful. We love every part of who you are and who you will become.
Love forever,
Mama

A new rug arrived for baby boy. RugsUSA for the win.
Website | Facebook | Twitter | Pinterest |
This isn't the first time that I have talked about my thoughts on baby boy's nursery. It also shouldn't be of any surprise when I say that it has been the last room in the house for us to decorate, devote our time to, and prepare for our baby boy's arrival. Shame on us, I know.
I have also mentioned in the past about my dilemma with the rug that I had originally purchased for the mister. Yes? Yes. Although I had loved the rug itself, it just didn't seem to fit.
But no worries, Rugs USA came to the rescue!! I had the pleasure of working with this wonderful company who was so patient with me as I went back and forth on the Area Rugs that I just couldn't decide from. I wanted to make sure I picked the right one this time around. And with so many rugs to pick from, can you blame me for having a hard time? The image above is just a glimpse of some of my favorite rugs. And each rug? Had multiple different colors to pick from.
And then I came across the Rugs USA Tuscan Trellis Grey Rug and I just knew this was it. It would match our nursery perfectly and it just screamed our baby boy's name {a name he doesn't even have yet}.
Once I received my confirmation of shipment, it literally arrived on my front porch within 3 days. And when I was able to examine the rug in person, I was that much more impressed with it.
The color was exactly how it was described and looked in the picture, the quality far-exceeded my expectations, and it was so soft that I couldn't even keep Elliana off of it. So naturally, I know the baby will enjoy having a soft safe little area to wiggle around on.
So next time I need a rug for an area in my house.... you better believe that I will be turning to RugsUsa.
Plus? They always have a deal going on, with free shipping! Two of my favorite things that a company can offer.

The Many Hats I Wear
10.24.12.
And seeing as how I am also pregnant, that conveniently makes me that much more emotional. Who would have thought....
But here is the thing.... I wear a lot of hats. Hats. Man, I sure do hate when people talk about the "hats" they wear. In my head... I'm thinking hats? What hats? I hate hats {they make my face look fat}. But here I am, talking about the hats that I wear. And for those that have never heard the term, or those that are like me and absolutely despise the term, then I will explain in normal people language. I carry a lot of baggage. I have a lot of roles. I am this, that, and everything in between.
Did that make any sense? I hope so.
Here is the part where I get a little deeper.
I feel like sometimes I forget all that I do. I don't appreciate all that I do. And I feel like people forget all the responsibilities that I carry on my shoulders, the sacrifices I make, and how hard I work at these things in my life. Sometimes I have to vocalize these things, and then I feel guilty for doing so. Am I saying that I am overwhelmed? No. Am I saying that I have too much on my plate? No. But do I wish that it was acknowledged more often? Probably. Maybe. I don't know. Yes.
And most days? 99% of the time? I never think about these things. But that 1%, that one day, which happens to be today, I think about it. A day where I just want to breakdown and say... you know what... I do a pretty amazing job for everything that I carry on my shoulders. And sometimes? Just sometimes... I'd like to be acknowledged for it.
What am I? Who am I? What do I do?
I'm a mother. A SAHM. First and foremost. It's by far the most important role in my life and will forever be the most important role in my life. My children come first and their health, life, and happiness is my number one priority. I make sure that my children are well fed with the best food out there and the healthiest that I can offer them. I make sure that they are well balanced. Daily time outside. Educational time inside. And time spent with other children when we have the opportunity. I make sure they know how to be gentle. To say their please and thank yous. To be kind to others. I make sure that they get enough love and hugs during the day. That I tell them just how much I love them, how beautiful they are, and how special they are in this world. Because they are, and they always will be. Being a mother? Is not something I take lightly. But the great thing about it? I absolutely, 100% love every minute of it. Without a doubt.
I'm a wife. I wouldn't be a mother without first being a wife. My husband is my best friend, my soulmate, my partner, and my better half. He completes me in ways no one else does, and I know he is the man I am to grow old with. I believe in traditional roles and I push myself to be the best wife I can be. I'm not perfect. I have plenty of room to improve, but the places where I need to improve are within myself more than anything else. I believe in a clean home and taking care of my husband. I make sure he comes home to a home cooked meal on the table, drink, utensils, and paper towel all set for him, and his lunch packed for the next day. Monday through Friday. No ifs or buts. It's important for me to know that my husband is taken care of. That he doesn't have to scramble for food. That he can come home and unwind. And that I help make that happen. He doesn't expect this out of me. He doesn't demand it. I do it because I enjoy to and it pleases me to put food in my husband's belly. Especially when it tastes good {can't say it always does}. Again... its the whole traditional thing that I so strongly believe in.
I'm a nurse. I work in the ICU. Full time nights, 3 nights a week, as a registered nurse. I work for the number #1 rated critical care in the state. A 40 bed medical ICU. A unit where we see the sickest of the sick, the strangest cases, and the most remarkable ones as well. People who go from near death to walking out. And sometimes? Those we have to let go. Some are old. Some are young. I've had 3 cases alone where I was the primary nurse taking care of organ donars. Teenagers in all cases. Families I had to support. A process where I will remember each and every one of these kids forever. I love what I do, and I am grateful that I can help provide for my family and at the same time be a full time SAHM with my children.
I am the financial/major life decision maker. I pay all the bills. I set up our retirement, our life insurance. Our car insurance. Our health, dental, and eye appointments. Whether or not to buy a car. What kind of house we can afford. What we can afford. A budget or not. Tax man {woman}. I am that person. And my husband gives me that responsbility 100%. And trusts all the decisions that I make. And honestly? I wouldn't have it any other way. I like to know everything that is going on, and feel as though I have always been very responsible and smart with my money. I've had a job since I was 14. Paid my own cell phone bill since then. Paid for my own braces. Paid my gas. I have always worked hard for my money and if I want something? I'll make it happen. And honestly? I'm proud of that.
I photograph. I photograph to make memories for my family to look back on. To track my children's milestones. To capture the beautiful moments in our lives. I photograph because it makes me happy. I enjoy it. It's one of my favorite hobbies. I photograph for others. Families. Couples. Children. And I make money doing so. I make albums for my families. I blow up pictures to hang on our walls. I make photo books to track our memories. I photograph. Yes, I do and it's one of my greatest passions.
I write. I blog. And I take it seriously. What started out as a hobby has grown and transformed into someting even greater. It is my journal. My outlet. My memory for my family. Something to leave behind for my great great great grandchildren. Words and stories that brings joy to my heart. It's also something that provides more money for my family. Quite a bit more. And because of this, I work even harder at my blog. It's more than just my personal space. It's also my work space. I challenge myself to stay on top of it. So much so, that I have at least 2 weeks worth of posts scheduled at one time. So that I never feel pressured by my blog. Obligated. Or feel like I need to pull away from other aspects of my life. My blog is my personal space, a hobby, but it's also something that I see as a job. A fun job that I hope never ends.
So there you have it. My many hats. Although, there are more to list, those are my "every day" hats. Those are the responsibilities, roles, passions, and more in my life.
Now that I have written it out? I feel better. I feel like okay, I get it. I know who I am, what I am, and what I do. I know that I do a great job, but that there are always areas of improvement. I know that I work hard to maintain this house and make sure that my husband and children are happy, healthy, and well fed. I make sure that we meet our needs and our wants in our lives. That I find balance in what I do. That I find personal time to enjoy the little hobbies that are a big part of my life.
I am me. This is my life. I don't know anything else. I don't want anything else. I just want to know that I am doing a great job. And sometimes? I just want to hear it. Be acknowledged. Be appreciated.
My biggest challenge?
Is myself.
*** All comments have been turned off, as the intent of this post is not to hear how amazing I am or to have a pity party. I just wanted to write. And man. It felt good to do so.***

Creating the Perfect "Guest Basket"
10.23.12
The week that my friend Jody was due to come to stay with us for the weekend, I realized that I needed have a guest basket together for her stay. I had seen it a few times on a couple of blogs and thought it was the most brilliant idea ever. Once I set out to do it? It was surprisingly very easy and effortless. And after doing it just one time? I was instantaneously hooked. I will never have a guest again without making a basket. Mark my word.
You want to be in on a little secret? Most of this stuff? I already had in my house. The magazines. The kleenex. Extra toothbrush and toothpaste. Hand sanitizer. Waters. Snacks.
Even the actual guest basket. So? On a budget! You can do it!
Lucky for you {and me, for memory purposes}, I thought to take pictures prior to her coming. And now I can sit here and remember all the junk, I mean goodies I put in there.
Here is what I put in:
1. Toothbrush
2. Toothpaste
3. Lotion
4. Body Wash
5. Body Wash Scrub
6. Magazines
7. Mini-Kleenex
8. Cotton balls and ear swabs
9. Nailpolish
10. 2 waters
11. Snacks
Other things you can put in there:
1. Gum
2. Chocolate {I wish I had done that}
3. Little word puzzle book or something
4. Little wine bottles {I saw some at the store the other day for 1.00. They were the cutest thing ever, probably not very good, but definitely cute. And be sure its guest appropriate. Need I add that in there?}
5. A razor
6. Mini Shampoo/Razors
{Basically, anything that you can think of that you might forget when traveling/visiting a friend.}
Another thing I did with the gift basket was purchase her an individual towel and wash rag and placed them on the bed. Because that would be plain silly of me to try to stuff it in a basket.
Other advice? Be sure to have a scentsy running, a candle, or any other kind of room freshner. Nothing beats walking into a good somelling room.
Lastly, be sure to have some cute stationary around to write a little note to tape on there. Make it pretty with ribbon and such {I didn't quite have the time for that}. But a simple {cute} notepad added a nice finishing touch.
I'm no guest-basket-pro by any means, but I give myself a pat on the back for losing my gift basket V-card and doing a mighty good job at it.

Instagram does the talking. Life Lately.
Sometimes I have to just let instagram do all the updating on life. It's nice you know. Having instagram {or a phone in general} to capture the little moments. Moments that my big hunky dunky camera would never be able to since it doesn't quite fit so nicely in my back pocket.
As you can tell though, life lately has consisted of a lot of baby growing. A lot of days at the park. Enjoying the fall weather. Trying new recipes. And soaking in as much Elliana time as possible before baby boy gets here.
I have some fun posts coming up though. Including our family picture session. A name reveal {shocker, I know}, women connect announcement, and other little tid-bits.
And as for life? We have lots coming up. Including the big T.W.O. Yes. I can't believe I just said it. Planning that little party for our princess and her 3 day list of celebrations. Finishing the nursery {anyone else tired of hearing me talk about the-work-in-progress-nursery}, celebrating my nephew turning 4 {I can't believe it}, and getting ready for the holidays.
I am also trying to squeeze in some changes around the old blog here. Some of you may have probably already noticed. I will have a post on those changes {soon}.
Until then.

2. What are your "signature pieces" to wear.. your go-to outfits?
Leggings. Let's face it, it's definitely the mama go-to outfit. Not to mention they are the most comfortable thing in the whole entire world!
Dresses. I live in dresses 3 months of the year, pretty much. Maxis. Short dresses. Tight dresses. Loose dresses. Beach dresses. Cocktail dresses. All dresses.
Scarves or a cute jacket. Make any outfit cute.

5. If you had to spend money on clothes or home items, which would you choose?
As much as I love me some clothes... I could spend ridiculous amounts of money on home items. That being said, this one is a hard one... as I think self-image can truly impact ones mood... therefore, if I could have an endless amount of clothing to choose from? I would be one happy girl.
What just happened? I didn't answer the question.

7. Tell us in one sentence your philosophy behind shopping. {What makes you buy an item}
Sale. Deal. Steal. Not so much a sentence as it is just words... but definitely tells me in a nutshell. Except {the ironic part}, I don't mind forking out full price on designer items {watches, purses, sunglasses, etc}. Mainly because those sort of items last me years.
Next Weeks Questions: How I met your father.
1. Tell us about how and when you met your love and what attracted you most to him.
2. Show us the very first {or one of the first} pictures you guys ever took together. {Feel free to show us more than one}
3. Tell us some of your favorite memories that you two had together.
4. Tell us your favorite qualities about this man, what makes him "the one."
