Teachers. Our Eyes, Ears, and Hearts.

As a young parent, the topic of school comes up frequently in our home. At times, I have a desire to home school our children because I always want to be able to instill certain values and principles in their everyday lives. At other times, I think about my own personal experience and some of the valuable life lessons that were passed on to me from the teachers that I was graced to know. Teachers. They are so important in our children's lives, our community, and the education inspired in the young generations.

I believe that we all have a teacher or two that we will always remember. Someone who has impacted us in one way or another during the course of our childhood and into adulthood. For me, there was one in particular that will always stand out. I remember her name, her face, and her presence to this day. My fourth grade teacher.

She was like a second mother to me. I would never say that she favored me or showed me any sort of special treatment, but there was something about her approach during this year of my life that stood out to me. She knew my situation at home well. This was the year that I was pulled out of school the most. My mom needing to go to her second job so I could watch my baby sister. Instead of asking quesions, or making the situation more difficult than it needed to be, she turned it into something positive. She gave me extra "practice" assignments at home, pulled me to the side at the beginning of class to see how I was doing, and would just give me that special squeeze of the hand, pat on the back, and a smile when I'd walk into the room. I remember her asking what I wanted to be when I grew up, and I told her "a teacher." She smiled. And then she said those words that stayed with me, "I believe you can be anything your heart desires. Don't ever give up."

Teachers have a powerful ability to effect our children's lives. So, let's celebrate them.

Let us celebrate teachers and what they do. The hard work that they put into their every day. The ability to care for our children as if they were their own. The desire to go above and beyond their call of duty.

Teachers are our eyes, our ears, our hearts. We put our trust in them to set rules and instill values that we stand behind. To model appropriate behavior and help us raise young, kind, loving adults.

Help celebrate teachers by registering their classrom with AdoptAClassroom.org, where they may be part of the REAL Change project and be eligible for funding to help with cost of supplies that many teachers have to spend their own money on. Did you know that 92% of teachers buy their own supplies, and on average spend about $1,000 a year.

Please take a moment to register and donate through AdoptAClassroom.org.

    This & That

    This Happened:

We went to the zoo and had a blast! We renewed our membership that just expired this past month, and we are so looking forward to going more. This was also G man's first year going, and of course I did not document it the way that I had with E. Elliana also thoroughly enjoyed it and couldn't stop talking about the zoo when we cam home.

Graham found his feet! What is it about babies and finding their feet? I just think it is the cutest thing ever. So now he plays with his feet and hands all day.
And I am in love with sleeping babies. Seriously... it has got to be one of the cutest things on earth.

    Went to that:

Super Why live show. I have written a blog post about this and excited to share the details of this day. My heart was full on this day. Truly full.

    This email came:

Ebates sent me an email stating that I would be receiving my $214 check in the mail. Have you heard of ebates? Are you shopping through ebates? If not, you should! It's a free program and it is simple. You sign up, you get a free $10 gift card after your first purchase online, and the concept of the program is that you basically search which store you want to shop at {Macys, Kohls, etc}, it directs you to that store, tracks your purcahses, and then gives you a percentage back. Then you recommend it to friends and make even more! After 3 months, they send you a check! Free money. My only thing is sometimes I forget to go through their site when I site. It's like throwing away money.

    Made That:

We finally got around to putting together Elliana's sandbox and putting sand in it. Best part about it? It only cost us $40, compared to the $150 ones that I was looking at. I will share the details later.

    Mine and E's favorite snack:
    Made with my favorite homemade granola recipe{with some changes on my part}

    In love with that:

My first i-phone album came. Now, if you know me... you know I am obsessed with making albums of our family. The other day, Andrew said to me..."We really need to finally print these pictures from our phone." And he was right. You see, we will sit late at night just going through our phones and having these pictures bring back so many good memories. They are some of our favorite of all time. So I finally did it and purchased my first book full of just iphone pictures. 150 pages worth. For those that have asked... I went through walgreens. They always have promo codes on their site and additional codes on retailmenot.com. You can combine discount codes and shipping codes!

On Life with Two... 4 months later

I'd like to write about our lives as a family four as the months, and years, go by. Just so I can remember how things changed, how we learned to grow and understand our children and their dynamics, and my overall feelings on being a mama of two.

Things change you know. Things, somehow, get easier, better, and more fun. You seem to become smarter, wiser, and more fun. And even your relationship with your significant other, somehow, seems to develop into something better.

The other day, I looked over at Andrew and said those exact words..... "Wow, it's so much easier now. So much more fun. So much better."

    What is?

    Life with two.

Coincidentally, it was at the same exact time that we hit the 4 month mark for Graham. Which I still cannot believe.

So here we are, four months after being blessed with our son's life, and we are at a really good happy place. Now, I'm not saying that everything is peaches and butterflies. Andrew would probably have a whole different perspective to tell you on life with two. Simply because, he is the one having to wrangle the two alone 3 nights a week while I'm at the hospital. That being said, I too, am sure that will get easier and better with time.

But, lets focus on how life has been with two.

    WHAT HAS BECOME EASIER

Everyday things like dishes, laundry, and picking up the house has gotten easier. Graham is now at an age where he loves to look around, loves to stare at E and Carson, and loves to play with toys. So? Naturally? He can self-entertain more. Which in return has allowed me more time to actually wash more dishes, fold the clothes that have sat there for over a week, and make the house look semi-presentable for guests. Now, again, Andrew's perspective? It still isn't spotless as his OCD self would like it to be. However, I told him that he will have to wait 20+ years for that to happen. Well, maybe just like 15. Teenagers are capable of picking up after themselves, yes?

Less fuss. Graham is out of that newborn stage and truly a fun infant now. I don't have to walk around the house with him all day every day to keep him happy during awake hours. We can actually all go outside, and I can sit with him in my lap and we can watch E play. I can put him in the bouncer and dance like a fool in front of him. I know what he wants, when he wants it, and how to get it to him. And as a result? Everyone's much happier.

Less fuss from E. Although she is still very much attached to mama {and I do not see that changing anytime soon}, she is however aware when mama needs to take care of G. Including when we are out in public and at toddler time and such. She just gets it.

    WHAT HAS BECOME BETTER

Our relationship, as a family of four. We understand Elliana so much more. Andrew's and mine relationship {though far from perfect and has room to grow} has blossomed lately, like teenagers at times giddy about one another. We aren't as stressed as we may have been during the first few months, and we actually have time to stop and breath now.

Sleep. I know I should not compare one baby to the other, but for comparison purposes, lets just say we were in a much better place in regards to sleep when E was this age. In fact, she was sleeping through the night {13 hours} from age 2.5 months on. So G? G wanted to show us how different and unique he was in his ways. Although he loved his sleep... he was picky {in the sense he only wanted to be held} and very unpredictable. Now? At 4 months? We are seeing the light. He sleeps longer intervals {sometimes an 8+ hour stretch at night}, taking more regular and predictable naps, and needing us less. Although we, scratch that Andrew, struggles at night with him while I'm gone, even he has reported some improvement.

    WHAT HAS BECOME MORE FUN

Seeing the interaction between E and G. You know, Elliana has loved G since the minute we brought him home from the hospital. No exaggeration there. She has always been very gentle with him, caressing him, loving on him, hugging, kissing, and aware of his presence as she plays. Always. But what I have noticed lately is how much more she wants to interact with him. Now that he is wide awake, very alert, and smiles and giggles, she wants more and more to be a part of that. She gets excited to see him in the morning when he wakes up {he's always last to get up}, spend the day in the playroom with him helping him with his toys and telling him all about them, and even bath time excites her as she always tries to help out and asks for a washcloth so she too can "wash the little guy."

Us. As a family of four. We can do more things together. Before? G man slept through all the activities. Every outing. Every little trip. Now? He gets to actually participate. Sure, the extent of his participation is him just having his eyes open and throwing a smile at us from time to time... but even that is fun and exciting for us.

WHAT I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO

Creating more and more memories as a family of four. Watching Graham grow. Watching his personality unfold. Watching the two of them create a close bond that I can only dream of. And also, filling my marriage with more love. I look forward to a time where I am comfortable being away more with just my husband and I.

There are so many milestones down the road.

So far? Month 4 has been a really darn good one.

    2 Mamas, 2 Stories & Giveaway

    1. How scared were you when you realized that you were going to have your baby 13 weeks early?

Holy moly was I petrified and worried!  Although it wasn't the plan (and I loveeee to plan everything) it was our reality and I wouldn't change anything about what happened.  My heart cracked wide open that day with a love I never thought was possible.  At the time I was so confused and scared but now I rarely think about it {I'm sure I'll be eating those words when it's time for baby #2!!}.  I'm just so thankful she's ours!
    2. What were the biggest challenges you faced while in the NICU?

The sounds, the lingo, the anxiety, the drive when she was an hour away - everything was new and challenging honestly.  My post about that long walk sums it up.  The worst day was when they moved our daughter from NICU Level 3 to Level 2 without calling us so when I showed up to spend the day with her, I walked around the corner to see an empty pod.  My life stopped completely at that moment and I screamed and cried for the next 2 hours even after they took me to her and I knew she was fine.  It was a simple miscommunication of which nurse was going to call us but one that almost killed me!!

    3. Tell us about the day that you were able to bring her home.

So incredibly comforting and exciting.  I thought I was going to be scared and worried but I really wasn't.  With baby girl being in the NICU for 52 days we essentially got 52 days of first-time parent training from nurses who focused just on us!!  Baby girl's NICU nurses were amazing and when we left I felt so confident, excited and prepared to take on the new Mommy role.  She was finally totally ours.  I could feed her, burp her, put her down, change her diaper.  ONLY ME!  It was heaven!

    4. List 3 things you have learned about motherhood.

    1.  It's okay to say no -- I said yes to everything before I had my daughter with work, family, life, etc. I thought I was superwoman!  Now I know the world turns without me saying yes to everything.  The events at work will get done, my girlfriends will still love me if I say no to one party or wedding, life does go on.  Seeing baby girl's first steps and hearing her laugh for the first time though?  Those moments are why I now know it's okay to say no!
    2.  Learning how to react -- Having a child completely changed how I reacted to pretty much everything.  Before I was quite the drama queen!  I look back now at some of the things I got mad at my fraternity men (at work) for and I laugh and think man I didn't have a life back then!  Baby girl just put everything into perspective for me.  What scares me, scares her; what made her cry were things that I jumped up and freaked out about.  I had to relearn how to react and let me tell you, I'm loving the more laid back me!  I think I'll keep her!
    3.  My Mom was totally right (dang it) -- you will be able to do your make-up/hair/get dressed in less than a minute when needed, perfecting that yes-I'm-totally-listening-to-your-stupid-advice-but-not-ever-going-to-use-it-face is super easy, changing diapers really isn't that big of a deal, no matter how much pink you put on your daughter people will STILL call her a boy, you will never stand still again/you will always be rocking a baby even when by yourself, the visions you had of a baby sleeping soundly in a pack-n-play while you worked out/cooked/cleaned/watched Real Housewives are truly not real, etc. etc.

     My favorite memories:
    1. First trip with my (now) husband
    2. White water rafting & rock climbing
    3. Dancing with old friends at our weddings
    4. Eloping in Maine last April
    5. Seeing our baby boy giggle for the first time; announcing our pregnancy!

    1. What is the greatest part of being a mom? The best part of being a mom is watching Ari learn new things and smile -- oh his smile! I never thought I would be able to love someone as much as I love him.

    2. What is the hardest part? The hardest part about being a mom is dealing with the lack of sleep. Losing sleep can make a person completely irrational in the way they act. I learned that the hard way! Something like spilling coffee after only getting an hour of sleep can make a mama have a complete meltdown!

    3. If you could have known ONE thing going into this journey, what would it have been? I would love to have known how much unsolicited "advice" and opinions people would be so willing to give. Everything from nursing to going back to work seems to be a hot topic. I've learned quickly that you decide what's best for your family. No one else matters.
