On eating organic

Two years ago, if you had told me that I would buy something, just one thing, organic... I would have laughed at you.

One year ago, if you would have said that the majority {90%} of the food that was in our home was organic, I would have said no way.

You see, before having my child, I was very much against the word. You know, ORGANIC. Whenever I heard the word, whenever I saw the food, I would just cringe. Why, I would ask? Why were people so obssessed with organic, and why on earth were the falling for it.

The organic spell. The trick. The hoax. They were falling for the peer pressure, the media, and all the crap that everyone was feeding into them about the food, or lets say, poison that they are putting into
their bodies.

I recall even saying that I would NEVER be one of those people.

My thing was... we've been eating this food for years. I''ve turned out fine. Health wise? Probably more than fine. I can maybe count on one hand how many times I had been sick all m life. So poison? Psh, I don't believe it. Not fooling me.

And then my daughter came around. My precious beautiful daughter. And Andrew and I started to watch what we ate as far as "health" is concerned. I had always watched what I ate, but I think we were just much more conscious about it. We wanted to eat healthy so that we were doing what was best for our bodies as well as our daughter.

And then when my daughter was of age to start introducing her to real human food, the research began. I was so focused on what was in her food. What I was giving her and to me, I wanted nothing but the best.

So from the beginning, I made all her food. And most of her food that I had bought to make it was organic. Anything that I could find that said Organic on it, I bought it.

And so when she turned 1 and we transitioned her from breastmilk to cow's milk, I automatically started her on organic, grass-fed cow's milk. No questions asked.

But here we were, Andrew and myself, still drinking regular skim cow's milk.

And one day it hit me... why aren't we doing it as well? The organic thing. Why am I not as concerned about whether or not it was organic if we were consuming it?

That's when things changed. Slowly the "regular" food was running out was quickly replaced with organic. Organic milk. Organic bread. Organic eggs. Organic vegetables and fruit. Organic cereal. Organic oatmeal. Organic yogurt. And the list goes on and on.

And now I sit here today, and I am proud of these changes. Really happy for my family, and excited for this new lifestyle that we have incorporated into our home.

Do I think it's best and only way? I'm not sure. Do we go crazy about what we eat outside of our home? Not at all. Do we splurge and treat ourselves to a yummy non-organic treat from time to time? Why yes, we're only human. And will I ever read those crazy-health-nut-books that tell you that everything you eat is basically going to kill you? No, no thank you.

But am I happy with the decision I have made for my family? Absolutely.

Hands down, it is one of the best decisions I have ever made for our family.
One of the most expensive...

But definitely one of the best.

  1. I love when I buy organic because it makes me feel like I'm doing something good for my body! I'll probably be like you when I have kids as well! :)

  2. The fact that girls are starting their period at 8 years old now is proof enough for my hubby and I to buy organic. The hormones they put in food is terrible. Good decision.

  3. Good for you guys!! We eat mostly organic as well and have been able to not increase our grocery budget by buying a whole grass fed cow and growing our own produce. There is definitely some sacrifice but it's totally worth it!

  6. This story sounds exactly like me. I always said I'd never jump on the bandwagon. Well two children later, I've jumped on the bandwagon.

  7. I'm going to start Noah on rice cereal next month and the whole "organic" concept came across my mind as well. I drank organic milk when I was pregnant but that stopped after he was born. Now that he's about to start eating, I want him to get the good stuff. Do you have any particular brands that are good for babies?

  8. You should watch the documentary "Food Matters" on Netflix if you have instant streaming. It will totally blow your mind. The benefits of organic food are amazing and the lack of these nutrients is making us sicker and sicker. It gave me chills. It's worth the hour to watch it, you won't be able to tear your eyes away!

  9. I could swear that I read this blog post before?? Am I imagining something? Ok because I also agree with EVERYTHING you said. I SO went organic about 3.5 years ago, and my kids have NEVER EVER drank regular milk. never. its been organic rice milk from day one. They also have never ever drank juice, is that weird? Its water and rice milk.

SO with you on the organic, it DOES make a difference and is not that more expensive.

ok so lets get to planning the favorite things vlog!! Im so excited!! want to announce it this week?

  12. Love this! I believe food is such an ethical decision. It's definitely bigger than the fad, but a choice we make to give our bodies what is whole and good. I am like you--I always said I would never care about that, and now here I am. . . snacking on snapped peas.

  14. We do the same thing in our house and I just feel so much better about doing it. We also try to support our local organic farms where we can see where our food is coming from....maybe I'm just a dork and think its kind of fun to see the farm and everything;) Hope you have an awesome week, girl!

  16. I have been debating if we should start doing organic around our home. I asked my hubby about buying organic milk, but he wasn't on board because of the price.

I guess I need to research it and give him the facts. Any tips on where to start or get good info.?

  17. I would love a post on buying organic and not going bankrupt from it! I always want to buy the organic... but then the price tag is compared to non organic, and I think, "hmmm I can wash this fruit/veggie extra good." And buy the non-organic. Now, I'm not a Mommy yet, so I don't have that feeling of wanting the best for my baby (yet!). Anyway, love the blog and your fam is so beautiful!
