The Mean Mug

Elli has this look that she has been giving us for the past couple of months.
She'll flash it at us every once in a while.
But most of the time, she does it to complete strangers.

They'll try to tell her how cute she is, or make her laugh.
And the look comes out.
It's a scary one.

But the funniest time she does it is when she really uses "the look" appropriately.
Like when I have done something that SHE doesn't think is funny.

Or when mama makes a serious face... she has to do it too. Except she looks MEAN doing it.

And then when I make lots of noise and it wakes her up?

Exhibit A. The look.
Not a happy camper.

But what I love most about this picture is the fact that I can see the future.
16 years from now.
This very same exact look.

When she asks to go to her girlfriend's house, and I tell her I have to call "susy's mom" first.
Or when I ask her if its "that time of the month."
And when I ask her for some mommy kisses and snuggles.

The look.
I'll get it, I'm sure.
More often then I would like.

And when I get it?
I'll quickly run upstairs to my bedroom.
Dig through the closet.
Go through the filing cabinet.

And find the picture.
This picture.

Just to remind myself.....
They may grow up one day..... but some things never change.

Yesterday while in a dressing room, I heard a sassy teen daughter mouthing off to her mom. I couldn't help but think, OMG, that must be what I sounded like to my mom all along.

  20. Jackson has just started his mean mug..mainly with strangers. But as he quickly puts 2 and 2 together, I expect to see that look headed my way as well. I'd definitely keep this photo handy for the 16-year-old Elli!
